The U.S. Department of Justice has some questions for Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson about how she’s managing the state’s bloated voter rolls.
On Monday, Michael Gates, deputy assistant attorney general at the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division, penned a letter to Benson to request a copy of the state’s voter registration list and other information on how she’s managed it since November 2022.
“Please … provide a description of the steps that you have taken, and when those steps were taken, to ensure that the State’s list maintenance program has been properly carried out in full compliance with the [National Voter Registration Act],” the letter read. “Please include both the actions taken by Michigan officials as well as local election officials.”
