Sen. Irwin refuses to acknowledge neglected Senate district

When cen­tral Michi­gan vot­ers regret­tably vot­ed to send Kris­ten McDon­ald Riv­et to Con­gress last Novem­ber, they did­n’t real­ize they would be left with­out rep­re­sen­ta­tion in the Michi­gan Sen­ate for the next nine months and count­ing.

They did­n’t expect Gretchen Whit­mer would sim­ply refuse to per­form her con­sti­tu­tion­al (and moral) duty to call a spe­cial elec­tion to fill the 35 State Sen­ate seat.

But Gretchen Whit­mer so afraid that vot­ers will elect a Repub­li­can that she has sim­ply left a quar­ter mil­lion Michi­gan­ders with no rep­re­sen­ta­tion in the State Sen­ate.

That’s right: The Democ­rats are afraid of democ­ra­cy, so large parts of Bay, Mid­land, and Sag­i­naw coun­ties have been with­out Sen­ate rep­re­sen­ta­tion since Jan­u­ary.

When Sen­a­tor Jeff Irwin (D‑Ann Arbor) was asked about this trav­es­ty, Irwin cute­ly dodged the ques­tion by instead attempt­ing to smear House Speak­er Matt Hall on a false premise.

When asked, Irwin instead shift­ed to crit­i­ciz­ing House Speak­er Matt Hall, R‑Richland, over what he claimed was a con­sti­tu­tion­al issue.

“It reminds me of … how the speak­er right now is vio­lat­ing Arti­cle Four, Sec­tion 33, which com­mands the leg­is­la­ture to trans­mit bills to the gov­er­nor when they are passed,” Irwin told The Mid­west­ern­er.

“And you know, if there’s some sort of court rul­ing to say that all branch­es have to fol­low the clear terms of the Con­sti­tu­tion, I think that would be great, because right now, the speak­er is uncon­sti­tu­tion­al­ly with­hold­ing nine bills that have duly passed the leg­is­la­ture, direct­ly vio­lat­ing Arti­cle Four, Sec­tion 33. And you know, I’m hope­ful that he will final­ly start fol­low­ing the Con­sti­tu­tion.”

Irwin was refer­ring to House Speak­er Matt Hall not trans­mit­ting expired leg­is­la­tion passed by the Demo­c­rat-con­trolled House in 2024 to Gretchen Whit­mer’s desk.

By their own incom­pe­tence, Democ­rats sim­ply failed to deliv­er nine bills approved by the Demo­c­rat-con­trolled leg­is­la­ture at the end of 2024, so they attempt­ed to sue House Speak­er Matt Hall to order him to deliv­er their now-expired bills for the gov­er­nor to ille­gal­ly sign into law. The law­suit was reject­ed.

Sen­a­tor Irwin invok­ing this issue — in which they attempt­ed to blame Repub­li­cans for their own incom­pe­tence — in response to Gretchen Whit­mer’s will­ful denial of democ­ra­cy in Michi­gan only serves to under­score what total­ly immoral, brazen hyp­ocrites the Democ­rats are.
