When central Michigan voters regrettably voted to send Kristen McDonald Rivet to Congress last November, they didn’t realize they would be left without representation in the Michigan Senate for the next nine months and counting.
They didn’t expect Gretchen Whitmer would simply refuse to perform her constitutional (and moral) duty to call a special election to fill the 35 State Senate seat.
But Gretchen Whitmer so afraid that voters will elect a Republican that she has simply left a quarter million Michiganders with no representation in the State Senate.
That’s right: The Democrats are afraid of democracy, so large parts of Bay, Midland, and Saginaw counties have been without Senate representation since January.
When Senator Jeff Irwin (D‑Ann Arbor) was asked about this travesty, Irwin cutely dodged the question by instead attempting to smear House Speaker Matt Hall on a false premise.
When asked, Irwin instead shifted to criticizing House Speaker Matt Hall, R‑Richland, over what he claimed was a constitutional issue.
“It reminds me of … how the speaker right now is violating Article Four, Section 33, which commands the legislature to transmit bills to the governor when they are passed,” Irwin told The Midwesterner.
“And you know, if there’s some sort of court ruling to say that all branches have to follow the clear terms of the Constitution, I think that would be great, because right now, the speaker is unconstitutionally withholding nine bills that have duly passed the legislature, directly violating Article Four, Section 33. And you know, I’m hopeful that he will finally start following the Constitution.”
Irwin was referring to House Speaker Matt Hall not transmitting expired legislation passed by the Democrat-controlled House in 2024 to Gretchen Whitmer’s desk.
By their own incompetence, Democrats simply failed to deliver nine bills approved by the Democrat-controlled legislature at the end of 2024, so they attempted to sue House Speaker Matt Hall to order him to deliver their now-expired bills for the governor to illegally sign into law. The lawsuit was rejected.
Senator Irwin invoking this issue — in which they attempted to blame Republicans for their own incompetence — in response to Gretchen Whitmer’s willful denial of democracy in Michigan only serves to underscore what totally immoral, brazen hypocrites the Democrats are.
