Garlin Gilchrist announces run for governor

It was inevitable, and now it’s offi­cial: Lieu­tenant Gov­er­nor Gar­lin Gilchrist is run­ning to suc­ceed Gretchen Whit­mer as Michi­gan’s worst gov­er­nor.

Gilchrist is com­pet­ing with Sec­re­tary of State Joce­lyn Ben­son and Gene­see Coun­ty Sher­iff Chris Swan­son for the Demo­c­rat nom­i­na­tion.

Gilchrist is not par­tic­u­lar­ly known for hav­ing any achieve­ments or tasks in the Whit­mer admin­is­tra­tion, who seems to have kept him side­lined for the past eight years. He is most­ly known for pre­sid­ing over the State Sen­ate, a point­less job since he can­not vote except to break ties, which almost nev­er occur.

Like most Demo­c­rat politi­cians, Gilchrist is a career politi­cian with lit­tle expe­ri­ence in the real world. He worked just four years at Microsoft after com­plet­ing col­lege before becom­ing a com­mu­ni­ty orga­niz­er and then work­ing for the Demo­c­rat orga­ni­za­tion MoveOn. He ran a failed cam­paign for Detroit City Clerk, los­ing to Jan­ice Win­frey, just before being select­ed by Gretchen Whit­mer as a run­ning mate.

It appears Whit­mer kept the Demo­c­rat tra­di­tion of choos­ing a run­ning mate that can be count­ed on nev­er to upstage her.
